Leadership Institute

The Division of Workforce Development's Leadership Institute promotes the development and training of existing and emerging leaders in education, public, private and non-profit organizations. Through its tailored programs and services, the Institute is committed to identifying and nurturing the next generation of leaders.

Our Leadership Institute is integrally linked to the Division’s Corporate Solutions. Whereas Corporate Solutions addresses the needs of the organization through the use of a variety of services, the Leadership Institute addresses the needs of developing leaders.
The Leadership Institute’s primary mission is to improve leadership skills, behaviors and competencies that lead to better and more decisive decision making through training.  Our leadership training is designed to meet the needs of individuals who are at different stages in their leadership development with a menu of programs that include the following:

Building Legacies:
Women Who Lead, Serve, and Inspire

The Building Legacies Women's Leadership Summit was created to celebrate women that are making a substantive impact in our community.  This year, based on the overwhelming feedback from past participants, a decision was made to turn the single day event into a series providing four unique half-day leadership sessions.  

This year's inaugural series is entitled Women Who Lead, Serve, and Inspire.  Each session developed for this series captures the sheer essence of the key role that women play in shaping organizations, communities, and the next generation of amazing leaders.

This session will highlight women whose life journeys demonstrate the bold steps they have taken to lead, serve, and inspire.  Their stores filled with passion and determination will not only spark conversation, but more importantly create a call to action of building legacies one woman at a time.

Lessons Over Lunch

This Leadership Institute program is a quarterly series offered mid-day to allow participants an opportunity for professional development training over their lunch break.

The session will be facilitated with group discussion and presentation of various lea​dership​ topics, many of which were suggested by previous program participants as areas of interest for success in business today. Our facilitators have diverse leadership backgrounds from a variety of fields including education, business, and government.

Having the best services or products is simply not enough these days.  You must also be able to garner attention for your business in a world with hundreds of online, print, TV and social media messages.  This interactive session will focus on ways to expand your creativity to not only create buzz for your business but to also help establish strong, positive relationships that keep customers coming back.  It will also highlight ways to build creativity in your own team that makes work rewarding.

During her 19 years leading the City of Tallahassee's communication efforts, Michelle Bono was renowned for creative ideas including a flash mob on Gaines Street, "Survivor Kits" to residents dealing with the construction of Blair Stone Road, and even a wake for a dying Live Oak tree in front of city hall.  Today, she brings that same passion for creative and measurable results to her own business, providing training, marketing, and project management services to businesses and non-profits alike.  She understands customers, relationships, and media and believes creativity is not only fun but can impact your bottom line.

Leadership Conversations

The newest offering in our Leadership Institute programming, this event will focus on leadership conversations with local, state and nationally recognized figures whose leadership qualities have set them apart.  During the event you will hear first-hand the challenges and triumphs that they've faced over the course of their careers.

Using a three sector connector approach, the speakers will represent the following areas: for-profit, non-profit, and public.  In addition to the leader talks, each of the speakers will engage in a one-on-one conversation with TCC President Jim Murdaugh regarding key traits that successful leaders embody.  Guests will have the opportunity to contribute to the conversation while gathering key take-aways to advance their own leadership development.

Dominic Calabro
President & CEO of Florida TaxWatch

Under Dominic Calabro's leadership, Florida TaxWatch has earned and maintained the respect of the state's most highly regarded and influential leaders, and has earned the credibility and respect of the citizens of Florida as well as the state and national media.  In addition to serving as the President and CEO of Florida TaxWatch, he also serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Prudential Productivity Awards, which recognizes, awards, and works to replicate outstanding government productivity and innovative cost-saving achievements throughout Florida government worth more than $9 billion to date.  Before joining TaxWatch in early 1980, Calabro served as a graduate budget analyst with the Florida Senate Ways and Means Committee (later split into Appropriations and Finance and Taxation). 

Calabro is an "almost native" Floridian, having moved to South Florida from New York at the age of eleven.  After attending Catholic school, including four years at Catholic Seminary, he graduated with high honors from Broward Community College, later receiving his Bachelor's degree with highest honors from Florida International University. He also holds a Master's degree from The Florida State University and will soon receive a second Master's degree in public finance and budgeting.  

In addition to many business and civic honors, Calabro was named by the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the nation's Ten Outstanding Young Americans in 1994, and in 2006 Calabro was named the "Executive of the Year" by the Florida Society of Association Executives (FSAE), its highest honor.  He was recognized by Florida Trend magazine as a "Must-Know Floridian" in 2013.

Frederick Humphries, Ph.D.

Image of Frederick Humphries, speaker for Leadership ConversationsA renowned scholar, admired public servant and eighth president of Florida A&M University (FAMU), Frederick Humphries created the Life Gets Better and Graduate School Feeder Programs (GSFB).  During his nearly 17-year tenure at FAMU he more than doubled enrollment while simultaneously raising academic standards.  He increased the number of National Achievement Scholars at the school ranking first in the nation three times, out recruiting Harvard and Stanford, and made FAMU the nation’s number one producer of African Americans with baccalaureate degrees and third in the nation as the baccalaureate institution of origin for African-American doctoral degree recipients. His crowning achievement came when FAMU was selected as the first ever TIME Magazine/Princeton Review “College of the Year” in 1997. 

Humphries has served as Chairman and Board of Directors of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges; member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Pittsburgh and member of former President Bill Clinton’s White House Advisory Committee on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Corporate America has also sought his expertise as a member of the Board of Directors of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.; Brinker International; Barnett Bank (Bank of America), Florida; the National Merit Corporation; the Princeton Review, Academy for Educational Development (AED) and as founder and board member for the Thurgood Marshall Fund.  Additionally, he has received numerous awards including Floridian of the Year, the Thurgood Marshall Award for Higher Education, the University of Pittsburg Centennial Medallion of Honor, and the FAMU Centennial Medallion for Outstanding Achievement.  

He holds a B.S. degree in chemistry from FAMU (magna cum laude) and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was the first African American to obtain a Ph.D. in the discipline.

Wendy Walker
President Emeritus of Leadership Florida

During Wendy Walker's 28 year presidency, Leadership Florida grew from producing an annual class program to providing programs for the state's top college students, young professionals, locally elected officials from cities, counties, and school boards, new executives in Florida, graduates of community leadership programs, educators and members of the Florida Legislature.  Leadership Florida is also well known for producing televised debates between candidates running for Governor, the U.S. Senate, and President of the United States, and for its anti-discrimination campaign, the Faces of Florida.

Walker has served as president of the Economic Club of Florida, and currently serves on the boards of the Florida College System Foundation and the Tallahassee Village Square.  She graduated from The Florida State University, where she was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Mortar Board, Garnet Key, and Gold Key scholastic and leadership honoraries, and since then was selected for membership in ODK.  In 2001 she completed the leadership development program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

She is most proud of her two daughters, Beth and Julia, son-in-law Jaime, and grandson Luke.
